Cycle Safety Day 1

Today was Room 20's first cycle safety lesson. Kate tells us what they learnt:

Helmet Safety
First we checked if we could put our helmets on properly. It has to be on your forehead so you can see the polystyrene if you look up with your eyes. Next we tightened the straps at the back of the helmet. Before we buckled it up, we had to adjust the ear straps, so that the clip stays under your ear. Then we clipped up the helmet.

Brake Check
Next we learnt how to check our bike before we start biking. We had to test the brakes and check that the clip under our seat was staying down and was tight.

Tyres
Next we checked the air pressure in our tyres by pusing down on the tyres really hard.

Reflectors
We had to check if our reflectors were clean, especially the red one at the back.

Practising Signals On the Senior Court
Stop signal: We looked behind us then we put our right hand up.
Turning signals: We practised left hand and right hand signals by checking behind us then putting our arms out.
Turning right in the middle of an intersection: After we did our signal we had to slow down and do a life saver check. This is to check for people coming out of driveways and coming towards us. If they were coming towards us, we had to stop.

Thanks Kate!

Each child completed a Safety Check for their bike:
